Speed map
Vinraam and Empress Angel are the obvious front pair. Both have recent first-three settling evidence, and Empress Angel's gate 5 gives her a cleaner path than Vinraam from gate 9. Don Turboas, Fuel On The Fire and Gold Tianna form the next line, with Gold Tianna likely to be handy but not necessarily leading from barrier 7. The tempo should be genuine enough because two runners can ask for the same role.
The published selection, 6. Gold Tianna, maps into a workable on-pace position rather than the outright speed. That is a positive if Vinraam and Empress Angel overdo it, but she still needs to avoid being posted. Don Turboas has the inside draw and Erica Byrne Burke's strong local numbers, so he can get the softest run of the on-pace group. Enuff Dosh and Gold Armour are the back markers and need the leaders to come right back.
Historical overview
Hobart 1200m has a clear forward bias in the broader 59-race sample. Leaders have produced 40.7% of winners, on-pace runners add another 25.4%, and the midfield/backmarker bands have been much less effective. That is a strong warning against relying on a runner to make up a stack of ground.
The soft-track and +3m rail samples reinforce the same point. On soft ground, first-three settlers hold 40.4% of winners, and the seven-race soft/+3m sample jumps to 57.1% for leaders. Seven races is not a big base, but it lines up with the broader Hobart 1200m pattern and gives the forward horses the benefit of the doubt.
- Leaders are the main historical edge — 57.1% of winners in the soft/+3m sample settled first three.
- Inside barriers improve with the rail out — gates 1-4 have supplied 71.4% of winners in that same seven-race setup.
- Midfield and back are low-percentage zones — the broader and soft samples both make them hard to support.
Overall assessment
Empress Angel can use gate 5 to be right there, while Vinraam has to come across from wider and may ensure the first half is honest. That gives Gold Tianna a chance to take the trail behind the speed rather than be part of the duel. Don Turboas is the other map beneficiary because gate 1 lets him save ground and stay close to the historically favoured band.
- 6. Gold Tianna — the published pick is a sound race-shape chance if she lands just behind the leaders. Her on-pace map is close enough to the dominant zone without needing to burn early.
- 2. Don Turboas — the value-shaped map runner. He has the inside draw, an on-pace position and a positive Erica Byrne Burke track angle.
The published selection is 6. Gold Tianna at $2.93 fair odds versus $5.50 early, and the map broadly supports it. She is not in the absolute lead band, but she should be close enough if the speed pair give her something to chase. Sunrise At Kirra has a trainer angle but maps midfield, which the 1200m history does not love. The risk is that Empress Angel gets across softly and makes the leader's advantage stronger than the stalker advantage.
